Hinault’s Second Giro Victory

Frenchman Bernard Hinault entered his second Giro d’Italia and came away with his second victory. Hinault dominated stage 12 to Campitello Matese and took the overall race lead.

Five stages later Hinault struggled to follow a 4 rider attack on stage 17, which was led by second placed Silvano Contini, and lost 2’10” in Boario Terme. The race lead went to Contini.

The next day was the tough stage 18 from Piamborno to Monte Campione. Hinault would not be denied and rode away for the stage win, over 2 minutes ahead of a tired race leader Silvano Contini. The Maglia Rosa came back to Hinault.

Leaving no doubt about his victory Bernard Hinault won the final stage time trial in Torino and secured the 1982 Giro d’Italia victory.
